This year, I’m running the Boston Marathon as part of the Boston Children’s Hospital Miles for Miracles team to honor two very special kids who have touched my heart in ways I never imagined: my son, Jeremiah, and my best friend’s daughter, Adalina.
Jeremiah was a healthy newborn, full of life and energy, until at just two weeks old, he suddenly became very ill. As an emergency department nurse in Boston, I knew the best place for Jeremiah was Boston Children’s Hospital. He quickly became critically ill and, thanks to the incredible lifesaving care he received at BCH, he is here with us today.
Jeremiah was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis and septicemia, two conditions that nearly took his life. He spent weeks in the ICU, where the doctors and nurses not only saved his life but also gave us hope during the darkest days of our lives.
Now, at 7 years old, Jeremiah is a thriving, healthy boy who loves fishing, sports, and math. He’s excelling in school and continues to shine with a passion for life. He is still receiving support through Boston Children’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program due to moderate hearing loss. He has become a fierce advocate for himself and for other children with hearing loss, never hesitating to speak up and inspire others.
Equally as inspiring is Adalina, a remarkable 6-year-old girl born with Down syndrome. Adalina has taught everyone she meets the true meaning of strength and joy. From a young age, she was treated at Boston Children’s for a cardiac condition, and her journey has been nothing short of inspiring. Adalina is part of the Boston Children’s Down Syndrome Program, where she receives specialized care and support. Watching her grow and thrive has been nothing short of a miracle, and I am in awe of her resilience.
Both Jeremiah and Adalina’s stories are a testament to the care, love, and expertise that Boston Children’s Hospital provides. This run is not just for them, but for every child who has ever walked through those doors, seeking healing and hope. It’s an honor to fundraise and run for such an important cause, knowing that the money raised will directly support the amazing programs and treatments that are making a difference in these kids’ lives.
I am running this marathon for Jeremiah and Adalina, but also for every child whose journey has been shaped by Boston Children’s Hospital, and for every family that has been given hope, strength, and healing. Thank you for your support—together, we are helping create brighter futures for these incredible children.
