Watch: Mets 1B Pete Alonso’s late HR keys win in extra innings

Date:

Mets first baseman Pete Alonso came through with a clutch home run in the top of the eighth inning against the Marlins on Wednesday.

With New York trailing 4-1, Alonso ended a nine-pitch at-bat against Marlins reliever Calvin Faucher with a three-run home run to dead center, tying the game.

Alonso fouled off four consecutive pitches, including two low and away outside of the strike zone, before launching the 96 mph four-seam fastball 415 feet.

Alonso saw the ball well against the Marlins. Per the SNY broadcast, his three-run blast was his third hit of the day with an exit velocity of at least 113 mph.

According to Baseball Savant data, Alonso barreled in each of his four at-bats, ending the game 3-of-4 with one home run and two doubles. He lined out to left field for his only out.

The home run was Alonso’s second of the season. Both have come in key moments.

On Monday, the two-time Home Run Derby champion hit a grand slam against Marlins starting pitcher Cal Quantrill, extending New York’s lead to 6-1.

Following Alonso’s second long ball, the Mets (3-3) scored in extras to defeat the Marlins (4-3), 6-5, in the rubber match of their early three-game NL East series.

Alonso’s strong game was a welcome sight for New York after he hit .176 (3-of-17) in 21 plate appearances during the Mets’ first five games.

The slugger will try to build on his big game following a Thursday off-day. On Friday, New York welcomes the Blue Jays to Citi Field for its first home series this season.
