Tesco petrol station cordoned off following incident

Date:

An air ambulance and road ambulance, along with police officers, attended the incident at the Tesco petrol station on West End Road on Friday evening.

A resident who witnessed the scene told the Daily Echo he arrived home just after 8pm to “blue lights everywhere.”

He said: “I saw an ambulance and multiple police cars parked at the station. I heard the air ambulance before I saw it, and then I saw it using its searchlight, trying to look for somewhere to land.”

The air ambulance landed in a nearby field, believed to be Wynter Road Recreation Ground, to attend to the casualty.

Residents reported seeing a person on the ground under a petrol tanker.

Hampshire police later confirmed the man was not crushed or hit by a vehicle.

It is understood that the man, aged 51, had suffered from a medical episode.

How he ended up under the tanker remains unclear.

The witness added that he saw police officers taking photographs of the scene while medical professionals cared for the man.

The Tesco petrol station was temporarily closed, with tape, cones, and emergency vehicles blocking the entrance and exit.

By the time the casualty was taken to the hospital, the store had closed to the public, though it reopened and was operating as usual the following day.

The concerned resident, who asked to remain anonymous, added: “I hope the casualty makes a speedy and safe recovery.”

A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said: “We were called at 7.25pm on December 19 to reports of an injured man at a petrol station on West End Road.

“It was reported that the man was underneath a stationary petrol carrier. Officers attended, and a 51-year-old man was taken to hospital.”

Police confirmed the incident was medical in nature and that the man had not been hit by the lorry, which was stationary and delivering fuel at the time.

No further details about the man’s condition have been released at this time.
