The Southampton-based Community Payback duo say they have found new purpose and impact in their careers through the service, where they now help supervise unpaid work in the community.
Matt Simpson, 57, leads a team of more than 100 staff delivering Community Payback projects across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
He said: “I was doing my coaching badges and someone suggested I’d be good at working with people on probation.

“You don’t need to be good at DIY. You need to be good with people.
“I’d spot someone with a skill – like painting – and get them to lead.
“That sense of pride can be the start of real change.”
His team supports projects in partnership with schools, food banks, councils, and organisations like Marwell Zoo.
Matt said: “I come from a council estate background and I get that not everyone has the same start in life.
“Sometimes the people we supervise just need someone to believe in them.
“Probation gave me a second career. Now I get to help others find their second chance.”
Ellen Greenlees, 23, joined the service six months ago as a Community Payback supervisor in Southampton.
She said: “Working in a pub teaches you a lot about people.
“You learn to manage difficult situations, pick up on behaviour patterns and stay calm under pressure.
“That’s exactly what I do now.”
She also spent five years in the Air Cadets, reaching the rank of flight sergeant.
Ellen said: “It’s not about ticking boxes or just getting through the hours.
“I try to help people on probation see the bigger picture – how the work they do improves local schools, supports children, and benefits the community in real ways.
“Every day is different. It’s challenging, but it’s so rewarding.
“I feel like I’ve already grown massively in the role, and this is just the start.”
The probation service is currently recruiting for Community Payback supervisors and placement coordinators, with starting salaries from £25,000.
