Hampshire fire crews from St Mary’s Redbridge and Eastleigh all attended the scene at University of Southampton flat block on Glen Eyre Road.
When firefighters arrived, smoke was blowing from the first-floor kitchen, and breathing apparatus had to be used to get into the room.
Hose reel jets were then used to put out the fire, which a spokesperson for Hampshire said had been “caused by combustible materials left atop the hob”.

Ventilation fans were then used to clear smoke from the premises before crews returned to their stations at around 6.30pm.
Hampshire fire service has now reissued its advice on kitchen safety, reminding amateur chefs to keep tea towels, cloths and electrical leads away from the oven and hob.
A spokesperson for Hampshire fire continued: “Switch off the oven and hob when you’ve finished cooking and remove pans from the heat.
“A build-up of cooking oil/grease can increase the risk of cooking fires so clean regularly.
“Keep looking when cooking.”
