Super Falcons defeat Ghana 3-1 in WAFCON warm-up friendly

Date:

Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured a morale-boosting 3-1 win over the Black Queens of Ghana in a high-profile international friendly on Sunday in Casablanca, as both teams ramp up preparations for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Ghanaians had an early opportunity to take the lead in the 17th minute, but Doris Boaduwaa’s low drive failed to hit the target.

The Super Falcons gradually settled into the match and broke the deadlock in the 34th minute when Chiwendu Ihezuo’s effort took a deflection and rolled into the net.

Nigeria doubled their advantage just before halftime after being awarded a penalty. Asisat Oshoala stepped up and calmly slotted home from the spot, marking her first goal for the national team since October 2023 and her first in 2025 for club or country.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade made it 3-0 in the 50th minute, finishing with composure after a well-worked team move. Ghana’s Evelyn Badu thought she had pulled one back five minutes later, but her effort was ruled out for offside.

Head coach Justin Madugu rang the changes in the 56th minute, introducing Ifeoma Onumonu, Sikiratu Isah, and Esther Okoronkwo for Oshoala, Osinachi Ohale, and Ihezuo.

Despite Ghana’s recent wins over Malawi and the Benin Republic, the Super Falcons proved too strong on the day, controlling the tempo and seeing out the game professionally.

The victory serves as a strong statement of intent for Nigeria ahead of their WAFCON opener against Tunisia on July 6, as the nine-time African champions look to reclaim continental supremacy.
