Apple TV+ pauses McConaughey-Harrelson comedy

An upcoming comedy starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson slated for Apple TV+ is on pause as producers look to bring in a new showrunner.

Apple TV+ has paused productions on a yet-unnamed upcoming comedy starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. The cast and crew were sent home in mid-June after the departure of showrunner David West Read.

Read allegedly departed, citing creative differences. Deadline has learned that Apple and Skydance Television are in talks with Lee Eisenberg, who has also worked on Apple TV+’s “Lessons in Chemistry,” to replace Read.

Eight of the 10 episodes have already been shot, but a few reshoots may still be required. Currently, there’s no talk of a timeline, but Deadline says the new showrunner likely will need some time to adjust the show’s creative direction.

Apple has called the series a “heartfelt odd couple love story revolving around the strange and beautiful bond between Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.” The bond, however, is tested as the pair’s combined families attempt to live together on a ranch in Texas.

This project isn’t the first to suffer from spats between crew members. “Severance” famously saw multiple delays when showrunners Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman refused to work together.
