FIRS directs tax offices to open on weekends in June

Date:

The FIRS has announced that its offices will stay open on weekends throughout June to help companies file their annual tax returns on time.

Zacch Adedeji, chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), ordered the extended hours as thousands of businesses rush to meet the 30th June deadline for submitting their paperwork. The decision, according to a statement on Monday by Dare Adekanmbi, special adviser on media to the FIRS chairman, reflects Adedeji’s commitment to aligning the agency’s customer-focused policy with practical steps.

Tax offices across the country will now open from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm on Saturdays and from 12.00 pm to 4.00 pm on Sundays throughout June. The weekend service started on 14th June and will run until 29th June.

The move is designed to ease the annual bottleneck that occurs when companies whose financial year ends in December scramble to submit their tax returns. By law, these businesses have six months to file their paperwork, creating a massive rush in the final weeks of June.

Three senior FIRS officials – Amina Ado, Dick Irri, and Kabir Abba, coordinating directors of large taxpayers group (LTG), government and medium taxpayers group (GMTG), as well as emerging taxpayers group (ETG), respectively – have been tasked with telling staff about the new weekend arrangements.

In a message to staff, the three directors explained why the extra hours are necessary: “As you are aware, the month of June marks the peak of the annual Companies Income Tax (CIT) filing season, with many taxpayers whose financial year ends 31st December expected to file their tax returns by 30 June. To ease the process for taxpayers, enhance service delivery, and maximise tax collection during this critical period, management has approved the extension of tax office operations to weekends for the month of June 2025.”
