Liverpool reject Barcelona’s move for Luis Díaz

Date:

Premier League champions Liverpool have firmly rejected an approach from Barcelona to open talks with Colombian forward Luis Díaz, according to BBC Sport.

The 28-year-old was a key figure in Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning campaign, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists as the Reds clinched the title by a 10-point margin.

Díaz joined Liverpool from Porto in January 2022 and is under contract until 2027. Despite reported interest from Manchester City last summer and Saudi Arabian clubs, Liverpool maintained that Díaz is not for sale.

“I’m very happy at Liverpool, I’ve always said so,” Díaz told reporters while on international duty with Colombia ahead of matches against Peru and Argentina.

“They’ve welcomed me very well. The transfer market is opening, and we’re trying to arrange what’s best for us. I’m waiting to see what happens.

If Liverpool gives us a good extension or I have to see out my two-year contract, I’ll be happy. It all depends on them.”

Speculation around his future intensified after Díaz and his girlfriend posted emotional messages to Liverpool fans on social media, which some interpreted as possible farewell hints.

Despite the noise, Liverpool’s new sporting director, Richard Hughes, and FSG’s chief executive of football, Michael Edwards, remain focused on rebuilding the squad under Arne Slot, and Díaz is considered a vital part of their plans.
