Creele Animation Studios, a Nigerian startup geared towards promoting African storytelling on the global stage is set to unveil ‘Sopo’, a groundbreaking 3D-animated short film by May 2025.
The film’s title ‘Sopo’, which literally means ‘Connect’ in Yoruba Language, is an adaptation of ‘Dis Fela Sef! The Legend(s) Untold’, a memoir written by Benson Idonije, Fele Kuti’s first band manager and friend, is told from his perspective, chronicling his experiences and insights.
Nissi Ogulu, co-founder, Creele Animation Studios, said Sopo is more than just a 3D animated firm. According to her, it is a visual and historical chronicle of the birth of a movement.
“Sopo is not just an animated film; it’s a visually stunning and historically rich chronicle of the birth of a movement; our roots and an exploration of the transformative power of music.”
According to her, Sopo’s journey to the screen will begin with a private screening in Lagos this May. She said that following the exclusive premiere, the film will embark on a festival tour, introducing audiences worldwide to its compelling narrative.
She disclosed that the cultural and historical significance of the 3D animated firm makes it imperative to be told with authenticity and depth, which reinforced Creele Animation Studios’ commitment to pioneering African storytelling on a global stage.
“As Sopo prepares to make its debut in Nigeria and internationally, it stands as a testament to the rising power of African animation and storytelling. This short film not only celebrates African heritage but also aims to showcase the continent’s creative brilliance to the world,” Ogulu said.
According to her, Sopo is a celebration of music, Afrobeat, and the movement that shaped a global wave; and draws attention to parenthood, talent and the magic of music. Produced in Lagos and directed by Ogulu, with music and original score by Afrobeat singer Made Kuti and executive produced by Bose Ogulu, an award-winning talent manager.
John Etienne, business manager, Creele Animation Studios, said Sopo is part of a larger movement to position African animation on the global stage. According to him, Creele’s mission is to produce African animation for a global audience.
“There has never been a better time to take African animation mainstream. Nollywood is a major film market and the third-largest in the world by production volume, behind Hollywood and Bollywood,” he said, disclosing that incredible stories are waiting to be told, and that it would be unfair to keep them hidden.
