Inzaghi resigns as Inter coach after Champions League final rout

Date:

Simone Inzaghi has officially resigned as head coach of Inter Milan following the club’s crushing 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the UEFA Champions League final.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Inter Milan confirmed the mutual decision to part ways with the 49-year-old manager after a meeting with club president Giuseppe Marotta.

“The club and Simone Inzaghi are parting ways. This is the decision taken by mutual agreement,” the statement read.

The decision comes just days after Inter’s Champions League capitulation, a result that dashed hopes of replicating the club’s historic 2010 treble.

Though speculation about Inzaghi’s future had been circulating for weeks, including reported interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, the confirmation of his departure marks the end of a significant era at the club.

Inzaghi, who took over in 2021, had a contract running until 2026. During his tenure, he led Inter to their 20th Serie A title, two Coppa Italia triumphs, and two Champions League finals, though both ended in defeat. Despite this season’s disappointing conclusion, Inter lauded Inzaghi’s impact.

“His management was characterised by great passion, accompanied by professionalism and dedication,” the club stated. “His trophies brought the club back to the top of Italian and European football.”

Club president Marotta also praised the coach’s honesty and professionalism, saying, “Only when we have fought together to achieve success day by day can we have a frank dialogue like the one that happened today.”

In his farewell message, Inzaghi expressed gratitude to the players, staff, and especially the fans: “I will never forget you.”
His next move remains unconfirmed, though reports in Italy suggest a lucrative deal with Al-Hilal may soon be finalised.
