Coalition back, just in time for shadow ministry prizes

Date:

The federal coalition has reunited just eight days after the Nationals blew up their decades-long relationship.

The development has opened the way for Opposition Leader Sussan Ley to announce her fresh shadow cabinet on Wednesday.

On May 20, the Nationals pulled the plug on its coalition partnership with the Liberals in the aftermath of a landslide election loss to Labor.

The junior member had sought guarantees on four policies, including a recommitment to nuclear power, a regional investment fund, powers to break up big supermarket chains and universal telecommunications coverage.

The Liberals, still reeling from one of their worst election defeats ever, initially wanted to wait before committing and put every coalition policy up for review.

But by week’s end, they were offering “in-principle” support to those demands, which the Nationals have accepted.

Ms Ley is expected to make her announcement soon in Canberra.
