Three-time African champions Nigeria’s Super Eagles and four-time winners Ghana’s Black Stars will light up the Unity Cup Invitational Tournament on Wednesday when the two West African giants clash in the second semi-final at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium in London.
This much-anticipated encounter rekindles a 74-year-old rivalry steeped in history, passion, and pride.
While Ghana has enjoyed the upper hand over the decades, every clash between these two football powerhouses has carried the emotional weight of a war, where defeat resonates far beyond the pitch.

The Super Eagles recently ended an 18-year winless run against the Black Stars with a 2-1 victory in a March 2023 friendly in Marrakech, courtesy of goals from Cyriel Dessers and Ademola Lookman.
Before that, Nigeria’s last triumph over Ghana came in 2006, when a thunderous Taye Taiwo free-kick secured a group-stage win at the Africa Cup of Nations in Port Said, Egypt.
Ghana, however, still holds significant bragging rights. They edged Nigeria in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff on the away goals rule and boast the largest margin of victory in the rivalry, a 7-0 hammering in a Jalco Cup match in Accra on October 30, 1955.
They also won the only previous clash between both sides at Brentford, cruising to a 4-1 win in a 2007 friendly.
Nigeria, for their part, have had moments of dominance. A 3-0 thrashing of Ghana in Port Harcourt secured their spot at the 2002 World Cup, while a crucial victory in 1984 eliminated the defending champions from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
