Amorim to quit after Man United’s Europa League final defeat

Date:

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says he will step down “without any compensation” if the club no longer wants him, following their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.

The result capped off United’s worst season since 1974 after Brennan Johnson’s first-half strike secured Spurs’ first trophy since 2008, while United ended the night empty-handed.

Amorim’s side sit 16th in the Premier League with just one game left, a final-day fixture against Aston Villa.

Speaking in a post-match conference, Amorim admitted the defeat was painful but insisted he would not walk away unless asked.

“If the board and the fans feel that I’m not the right guy, I will go the next day without any conversation about compensation,” Amorim told reporters.

“But I will not quit. I’m really confident in my job. And as you can see, I will not change anything in the way I do things.”

Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November 2024, has overseen just six wins in 26 Premier League matches, watching his side slide from Champions League contention to 16th place, 27 points behind fifth-placed Chelsea.

“What I can say is that I think it was clear we were the better team, but then we managed not to score again, and that is really hard to win football matches,” Amorim added.

“The guys tried everything. In the future, we’ll have time to assess everything.”

The former Sporting Lisbon boss refused to comment on potential summer changes but acknowledged the looming absence from Europe next season, United’s first since the 2014/15 campaign.

“It is tough for a club like ours not to be in the Champions League,” he said. “But if we have more time, we have more time to think, to work during the week, and to be better in the Premier League. That will be our focus.”
