Sonni Gwanle Tyoden, a professor and former Deputy Governor of Plateau State from 2015 to 2023 under Simon Bako Lalong and former Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, has died at the age of 74. He passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2025, in Jos, Plateau State, after a distinguished career in academia and public service.
His death has drawn tributes from across the state and beyond, including from Simon Bako Lalong, a serving senator who served as Governor alongside Tyoden during the eight-year tenure of the APC Rescue Administration.
Lalong led a delegation of former cabinet members on a condolence visit to the Tyoden family residence in Rayfield, Jos, where he described the loss as deeply personal.
“I have lost a confidant, friend, and partner,” Lalong said, He described the late Tyoden as a trusted ally, teacher, and mentor who played a vital role in stabilizing and strengthening the state government during their administration. He added that Tyoden’s wisdom and dedication were instrumental to the success of their governance.

in a statement by Makut Simon Macham, Lalong’s spokesperson, made available to journalists on Sunday in Jos, says Tyoden’s contributions extended far beyond politics. As Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, he was credited with initiating reforms that transformed the institution and improved its academic standing. He also mentored numerous students, many of whom have gone on to excel in various professional fields.
“Tyoden left indelible footprints in the sands of time having served the nation in various positions including the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos where he turned around the fortunes of the institution.
“As an academic, Prof. Tyoden did not only distinguish himself in teaching and research, but also mentored many students who have risen to the height of their careers in various fields”; Lalong said.
He prayed God to grant his soul eternal rest and comfort the family, particularly his wife Abigail Tyoden and children.
In a response on behalf of the family, Gyenu Tyoden expressed appreciation for the outpouring of condolences and support. He thanked Lalong and his team for their visit and acknowledged the strong professional relationship that existed between the deceased and his former colleagues.
The family announced that burial arrangements will be communicated to the public in the coming days. Tyoden who hails from Mangu local government area of the state is survived by his wife, Abigail Tyoden, and children.
