FIRS mandates closure of unauthorised tax collection accounts

Date:

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has issued a directive to banks nationwide to immediately identify and close all unauthorised FIRS tax and levy collection accounts not processed through the TaxPro Max system.

In a public notice signed by FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji and released to the media on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Dare Adekanmbi, the tax authority emphasised that the move is part of its ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency and transparency in tax collection processes.

“Effectively immediately, all tax and levy collections on behalf of FIRS must be processed exclusively pursuant to an assessment raised on the TaxPro Max platform,” the notice stated.

The TaxPro Max, a domestically developed tax administration platform, facilitates various tax-related activities, including registration, filing, payment, and issuance of tax clearance certificates.

According to the statement titled “Directive to Close Unauthorised FIRS Tax Collection Accounts,” the initiative aims to ensure uniformity and seamless reconciliation of tax payments across the country.

Furthermore, the notice said, “All banks participating in the FIRS Collection, Remittance and Reconciliation Scheme are hereby advised to comply with this directive within the stipulated period.”

The FIRS expressed confidence in stakeholders’ cooperation, noting that the transition to this centralised system would contribute to “a more transparent and efficient tax collection process.”

As a result of this new directive, taxpayers and other stakeholders requiring clarification or assistance have been advised to contact the Revenue Accounting and Refund Department (RAAD) at FIRS headquarters.

However, the implementation timeline for banks to complete the closure of unauthorised accounts was not specified in the public notice.
