College OC shares how Sanders is like Mahomes, Allen

Date:

Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders will begin April 24 as the most polarizing prospect of the 2025 NFL Draft class. Some believe the New York Giants could make Sanders the draft’s third pick, while others think he isn’t even a first-round talent.

During a chat with Tyler Dunne, author of the “Go Long” Substack, longtime college football offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach David Yost (currently with New Mexico State) compared Sanders to Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes and to reigning MVP Josh Allen.

“When you watch [Mahomes],” Yost explained, “there’s a whole bunch of throws in that game he catches, sets and throws the ball on time to a guy at a high, high rate. Then, every now and then, he has to go and make this spectacular play in that way. Josh Allen has become a tremendous player, but a lot of Josh Allen isn’t the super play anymore. It’s just making all the normal plays. And then I think he’s grown into that. And when you watch Shedeur Sanders, I think he fixes a lot of things you have to do as a quarterback. I tell the quarterbacks all the time, ‘Your job is to fix the mistakes of the guys around you.'”

Questions about Sanders’ personality have largely been overshadowed by claims that he lacks the “elite” physical traits a quarterback needs to excel in the NFL. While some seemingly believe at least Miami’s Cam Ward, Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart and Louisville’s Tyler Shough are better prospects at the position, predictions made as recently as Wednesday indicate Sanders will be the second quarterback drafted.

“If I didn’t have a quarterback,” Yost said, “I would draft Shedeur Sanders.

“…Just watching what Shedeur was able to do at Colorado at a really high level — over and over and over again, when everybody knew they were throwing the ball almost every snap. I mean, you’d watch that game and he found ways to make play after play after play to keep ‘em in games and win games. So I’ve been way impressed by him, and I think a lot of what he does will show up in the NFL.”

DraftKings Sportsbook listed Sanders as the betting favorite at -250 odds to be the second quarterback taken in the draft. That same outlet had a New Orleans Saints team with the ninth overall pick as the favorite (+100 odds) to grab Sanders.
