Boston Marathon
A grand total of more than $1 million will be awarded to winners in the open, wheelchair, and masters divisions this year.

More than $1 million in prize money is up for the taking in this year’s fiercely competitive Boston Marathon.
A grand total of $1,137,500 will be awarded to winners in the open, wheelchair, and masters divisions. $97,000 will be awarded to winners in the men’s and women’s para athletic division, a $20,000 increase from last year’s purse.
In the open division and some wheelchair divisions, the top 10 finishers will each receive a cash prize. The top three finishers in other wheelchair divisions and the masters division will take home cash prizes of their own as well. The prize money will be equally distributed between men and women in all of these divisions, the Boston Athletic Association said.
Runners in the open and wheelchair divisions also have the chance to earn a $50,000 bonus if they beat the course record. The current open course records are Geoffrey Mutai’s 2011 time of 2:03:02 for the men and Buzunesh Deba’s 2014 record of 2:19:59 for the women. In the wheelchair division, Marcel Hug holds the record time of 1:17:06 from 2023 for the men, and Manuela Schär’s 2017 time of 1:28:17 remains unbeaten.
Open division
Matching last year’s winnings, the first man and woman to finish the 26.2-mile race will each earn $150,000; the second will win $75,000; and the third will win $40,000. Other top 10 finishers will earn the following prizes based on their placement:
- Fourth: $25,000
- Fifth: $18,000
- Sixth: $13,500
- Seventh: $10,500
- Eighth: $8,500
- Ninth: $7,000
- 10th: $5,500
In the masters division (for runners 40 and older), the first-place prize is $5,000, second is $2,500, and third is $1,000.
Wheelchair division
Winnings for the wheelchair division have mostly increased from last year, with this year’s first-place finisher winning $50,000, up from $40,000 in 2024. Second place will receive $30,000 instead of $25,000, and third place will earn $15,000 instead of $12,000. The following earnings are up for grabs from the other top 10 finishers:
- Fourth: $10,000
- Fifth: $8,000
- Sixth: $5,000
- Seventh: $4,000
- Eighth: $3,000
- Ninth: $2,000
- 10th: $1,500
The top three athletes in wheelchair classes T51-52 will earn $1,500 for first place, $750 for second, and $500 for third.
Para athletics divisions
Across seven para athletics divisions, nearly $100,000 is at stake, roughly a 25 percent increase from last year. Nearly every division will receive $14,000 in winnings for men and women.
In each division, first-place winners will receive $3,000, and second-place finishers will receive $2,000. Third-place finishers will receive $1,500 in all divisions except T20, where the athlete will receive $1,000.
Course record bonuses across all para athletic divisions are $500 each.
